4 Step Checklist for VAT Registration in UAE

The value-added tax (VAT) has been officially announced for the taxable supplies in the UAE. Businesses that are involved in selling any taxable product or service in the country are required to register under VAT.

The VAT registrations are being accepted through the official website of the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) which stays open 24×7 for this purpose. The businesses who have not registered for VAT by the FTA VAT registration Portal deadline will have to pay a penalty as fixed by the tax authorities.

Who is required to Register for The VAT in UAE:

Every taxable person who lives in the state whose value of annual supplies in the member state exceeds and Vat is expected to exceed the mandatory Registration.

The Threshold for registration will be:

  •  Mandatory registration threshold: AED 375,000
  • Voluntary registration threshold: at least AED 187,500

Threshold will be calculated as follows:

  • A taxable person who made the total value of supplies in last 12 months.
  • The total value of supplies of the subsequent 30 days
  • The Value of exempted supplies will not be considered for computing the annual supplies

Checklist for VAT Registration Process In UAE:

  • The form should be completed by own person who is an authorized signatory of the business e.g. a Director, an owner and someone holding Power of Attorney to sign on behalf of the business etc.
  • Its required Prior to completing the form ensure you have considered the following:
    • Are you sure that you want to required to register for the VAT or are you registering voluntarily?
    • Are you applying for a single VAT registration or for registration as a VAT Group?
    • Having support documentation & information on hand to upload e.g trade license, certificate of incorporation, Emirates ID, Articles of Association, etc.sociation etc.

Follow the step-by-step procedure below to register your business under VAT.

When VAT registration form will be filled then also ask you to provide details about your business, such as:

  • you have to Description of business activities
  •  knowledge about the Last 12 months turnover figures
  •  Its all about your Project future turnover figures
  •  Expected values of imports and exports
  •  Whether you expect to deal with GCC suppliers or customers
  •  Details of Customs Authority registration, if applicable

Here is the Step by Step Process for UAE VAT Registration

Step 1: The FTA registration portal

When you first time accesses the portal you will be required to register your details.

Enter your personal details, including email address, name, mobile number, etc., and sign up.

Make sure to choose the right option in ‘purpose for registration’ field, from – Business registering for Tax, Tax Agency, or Tax Agent.

You can also change your e-services account password through the ‘My Profile’ option available at the top.

Step 2: The Vat Registration Verification.

As part of the account creation process, you will be required to verify your e-mail address.

A confirmation email will be sent to the address you mentioned on the sign-up form. Verify your email address by clicking the link in the email.

Once you’ve verified your account, you can log in to the portal by visiting the login page at https://eservices.tax.gov.ae/login and using your registered email address and password.

After the first time accessing the portal, you will simply be required to log in using your user details

Once you login to your e-services account you can see a button at the center of the page with title Register for VAT. Click the button to proceed with VAT registration.

The next page Once you have logged in, you will need to navigate to the VAT registration form.

You will then be asked to complete the VAT registration form.

7. Declaration
8. Review & submit

It is mandatory to complete a section before moving to the next one. All 8 sections need to be completed in order to complete your VAT registration.

Note: The system will automatically log you out after 10 minutes of inactivity. So, it is recommended that you keep saving the progress using the save button located at the bottom of the page.

1. About the Applicant

It will contain details of the person who owns or operates the business and not of the business itself. The form has the following fields:

On what basis are you applying for registration?

Natural person: An individual operating an unregistered business by himself or in partnership with other individuals such that the business is not registered through a legal mean (such as LLP and similar).

Legal person: A person or group of persons representing a legally registered business entity, including corporate entities, LLP’s, clubs, government entities, charities and associations, international organizations and foreign government companies, and other similar entities.

If other, please specify – If you’ve selected other option in the above field, you can mention details here.

Do you hold a Trade License in the UAE?

Are you registering mandatorily or voluntarily?

Are you also applying to create or join a Tax group?

2. Details of the applicant

This will contain further details of the applicant, including:

Name of the Applicant-

  • Existing TRN for Excise Tax
  • Legal name of the entity (English)
  • Legal name of the entity (Arabic)

Do you have a trade name that differs from the above?

  • Enter trade name (English)
  • Enter trade name (Arabic)

Identification of the Applicant

  • Trade License
  • Select the name of the authority that issued the Trade License
  • Trade License number
  • Select Trade License expiry date
  • Upload scanned copy of Trade License
  • Save Trade License
  • Add owner details (Only shows once a Trade License is saved)

Do you have a Certificate of Incorporation?

  • Upload a copy of the Certificate of Incorporation
  • Upload other relevant documents

Details of the Manager of the business (CEO or equivalent)

  • Enter name of manager (English and Arabic)
  • Is the manager resident in the UAE?

3. Contact details

Business contact details, including Building name and number of the official address of the person/entity.

4. Banking details

Bank Details of the person/business, including Bank name IBAN. The bank account name must be the same as the legal name of the person or business entity.

5. Business relationship of the Applicant

Details about Senior Management’s Relationships with other businesses

Are you (or any of the directors or partners of the applicant), currently involved in (or in the past 5 years been involved in) any other business resident in the UAE, either individually or as a director or partner in that business?

  • Partner/ Director details
  • Name of the partner/director etc.
  • Details of the business with which the applicant (or the partner/director of the applicant) is/was involved with and has a relationship with
  • Enter the legal name of the business the relationship is (or was) with
  • Is the business still trading?
  • Enter TRN (if available)
  • Upload scanned copies of Trade License(s)
  • Save and add more relationships

6. About the VAT registration

Details of taxable business activities, turnover, etc. This form will include the following details.

Business Activities of the applicant

  • Select the primary activity of the business (primary and secondary)
  • Add any other activities (or proposed activities)
  • Actual or estimated financial transaction values
  • Turnover for the past 12 months
  • Upload scanned copy of documentary proof
  • Expected turnover in the next 30 days
  • Expected expenses (subject to VAT) for the last 12 months
  • Upload scanned copy of documentary proof
  • Expected expenses (subject to VAT) in the next 30 days

Do you expect the VAT on your expenses to regularly exceed the VAT in your taxable supplies?
Do you also expect to make exempt supplies?

Imports and Exports

Do you intend to import goods or services?
Will any of these imports be from the other GCC States?
Do you intend to export goods or services?
Will any of these exports be to the other GCC States?

  • GCC activities
  • Select the name of the GCC Member State
  • Enter TRN (if available)
  • Estimated value of imports

Customs Registration Information

Do you have a Customs number?

    If yes, upload a scanned copy of Customs number issued by Customs authority

Do you wish to apply for an Exception from VAT Registration based on the above?

7. Declaration

At the end, you have to sign the form with your authorized business name and provide the following details.

Authorized Signatory

  • Title
  • Name in English
  • Name in Arabic
  • Proof of Authorization
  • Communication Preferences
  • Preferred channel of communication
  • Preferred language of communication
  • Checklist for Completion

8. Review & submit

When you’re done filling the forms 1 to 7, you can save and review the application in this step. Recheck and confirm all the details before submitting the application.

After reviewing the application details to make sure that all the information is correct, you can submit your application by clicking the ‘Submit for Approval’  and “Download”  The VAT form.

The FTA will then process the application and will respond to confirm your Tax Registration Number.

How to Check the status of your VAT Registration Application

It may take a few days for the FTA to check and confirm your application details and assign your a VAT registration number. You can check the status of your VAT application by visiting the account dashboard. The status field will show one of the following terms:

  • Drafted: the registration is still in draft status and needs to be completed and submitted by the applicant.
  • Pending: The registration form is under processing by the FTA or in wait for more information/documentation from the applicant.
  • Issued: The application has been accepted and a Tax Identification Number (TIN) has been granted to the particular business entity.
  • Suspended: The VAT registration has been suspended, however, your Tax group registration has been accepted and a TRN has been allotted.
  • Rejected: The VAT registration has been rejected by the FTA.
  • Approved: The form has been approved and the entity is successfully registered for VAT.

Make sure to complete the form in time, as the session will expire automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity.

  1. Hello,

    Apparently FTA requested to update our FTA online profile with current customs code, but we dont have any, and we are not registered with customs. We also dont see any need to be registered with customs. Will this affect our VAT registration and the issuance of our VAT certificate?
